The results are being kept under wraps until the prizegiving evening which will be in Hull on Monday, 19 April. Click here for the Look North clip. No mention of HALO, but we were there! John Butler 7 Mar 2010 10:53 - updated by Pete Shew 9 Mar 2010 14:18HALO's regular weekly orienteering Club Night in Beverley meets at the Girls Gymnasium in the Longcroft Upper School, Burton Road every Monday evening during the school term from 6.00 to 7.30 pm. Please note that the final session this term will be on 22 March where there will be a score event in the school grounds run by Junior International Zac Field but there will be a handicap based on age, experience, etc so everyone will have a chance to win. This will be followed by what is now becoming the traditional end of term party where we all bring along food to share. Then there will be a short break until we start the summer term on Monday 19 April. The club nights, which are led by qualified British Orienteering coaches, are suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels and include the following activities -

John Butler 12 Sep 2009 08:13 - updated by John Butler 10 Mar 2010 07:47HALO has agreed to organise the Final of the East Riding Schools Orienteering Championships at 4.15 pm on Tuesday, 20 April at Longcroft School in Beverley. Prior to that 13 cluster competitions are being held at various schools in the East Riding during the period 2 March to 16 April where HALO members will be present and available to give a hand if required. The top 10 scorers from each of the cluster events are being invited to take part in the Final where awards will be made to the first three boys and girls in each year group. Three cluster competitions have been held at the time of writing this report. The first at Hornsea Secondary School on 2 March had 20 competitors from Hornsea and Leven Primary Schools. The second at Beverley High School had 130 competitors from Minster (including HALO junior member Yasmine Field) and Ticton Primary Schools. The third at Bridlington Sports College on 9 March had 34 competitors from Burlington, Keyingham and Martongate Primary Schools. The next competitions are on 16 March at Pocklington Junior School and South Holderness Technology College. Given that there could be as many as 260 young people in the final, we will need some help on the day so please put the date in your diary and keep it free if you can. In the meantime if you want any further information contact Neil Harvatt or John Butler. John Butler 15 Feb 2010 16:41 - updated by John Butler 10 Mar 2010 07:59 The English Outdoor Council, the Campaign for Adventure and the BBC are jointly promoting this year’s Outdoor Adventure Week which will run from 2 to 11 April. The BBC is running a 10 week television series about outdoor adventure and has listed activities that are open to the public on its website http://www.bbc.co.uk/thrillseeker/The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has invited clubs to take part in this year’s initiative by offering free or discounted activities in order to promote themselves and raise awareness of the adventure activities that are on offer in the area. In the 2009 Week activities offered in the East Riding included archery, canoeing, climbing, cycling, fishing, golf, sailing, shooting and windsurfing. HALO has agreed to include orienteering in this year’s activities. We are organising the final event of the East Yorkshire Short Race Series at Londesborough Park on Saturday, 10 April and will put on a beginners course in addition. We will also draw attention to the permanent orienteering courses at Humber Bridge Country Park and Sewerby Park where members of the public can try orienteering at any time during opening hours John Butler 15 Feb 2010 16:16 - updated by John Butler 7 Mar 2010 11:51Most people will know that last weekend (24 January 2010) many Compass Sport Cup Rounds were cancelled (not ours though), including the CLOK event where all the North East clubs and all the YHOA clubs (except HALO) were going. Rearranging an event like this is a nightmare in a crowded fixture list. Originally the plan was to change the date to February 21st. This would have decimated our Beverley event as none of the Yorkshire clubs would be present. It was eventually accepted that changing the date would have a detrimental effect on any club who had an event on the rearranged date. Fortunately common sense has prevailled. The Compass Sport Cup Round 1 for the North East and Yorkshire clubs will now be held at our event at Scardale on April 25th 2010. (This does mean that it won’t be the YHOA Championships as the course combinations are slightly different). The British Orienteering National Badge Scheme awards Championship, Gold, Silver and Bronze Badges on the basis of performance over a series of events. Full details of the Scheme can be found at http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/event/about.php#national_badge_scheme . Championship Badges - are awarded each calendar year to Elite, Long or A course competitors who have achieved the qualifying time (at least one which must be recorded at the British Championships or the JK) at three of the following events - · The British Orienteering Championships or British Elite Orienteering Championships (Long distance race only);· The Jan Kjellstrom Individual Events· The National Events for that year.Gold, Silver and Bronze Badges - are awarded on performances in Regional Events, National Events, the British Orienteering Championships, British Elite Orienteering Championships (Long distance race only) and the Jan Kjellström Individual Events over a two year period. Competitors must compete on their own and reach the required standard in three events in the same class within the two years. Qualifying times are calculated from the winning times for the course. Gold is 125%, Silver is 150% and Bronze is 200% of a base time which is the average of the top three places. If there are only 11 to 20 starters then the base time is the average of the first two places; if there are 10 or fewer starters then the base time is the winner’s time. Badge times for shorter courses are calculated by ratio of length from the longest course that day for that age class. Junior (under-21) Ageless Gold, Silver and Bronze Badges - are awarded on performances in Regional Events. The scheme is open to competitors who compete on their own and reach the required standard in three events in the same class within two years. Apply for your Badge - to the Badge Scheme Secretary, Chris Boycott, 13 Dawlish Avenue, Stafford, ST17 0EU. The following should be supplied with a crossed postal order or cheque payable to 'British Orienteering', plus an SAE to fit an A4 certificate - 1. Your full name, club and British Orienteering number (or school, in the case of juniors who are not British Orienteering members) 2. The age class for which you wish to claim an award 3. The type of badge being claimed (Championship, Gold, Silver or Bronze) 4. The date, name and venue of the events on which the award will be based 5. The position and time of the claimant in each qualifying event 6. The type of award requested: cloth badge (£1.50), age/year flash (50p), certificate (50p) How can you show other orienteers that you have achieved a certain standard in orienteering? Well, one way is to apply for a YHOA ‘Colour-Coded Award’ when you have completed three orienteering courses of the same colour at a particular standard. The standard time for each course should be included in the final results. A White standard is achieved by anyone who successfully completes the White course. The standard for all the other courses is calculated using whichever of the following gives the larger number of qualifiers –

Pairs can qualify for Colour Coded Awards on the White, Yellow and Orange courses. When you have achieved the standard on three courses of the same colour, you are entitled to receive free of charge the appropriate YHOA fabric badge, which can be sewn onto your O-top to show your improvement, but you have to apply for it by writing to Dorothy Smith, 111A Westgate, Belton, Doncaster, DN9 1PY with the following information - 1. your full name and club (or school, if not a BOF member); 2. the colour of badge being claimed; 3. the date, name and venue of the three events on which the award will be based; 4. a stamped self-addressed envelope. John Butler 17 Feb 2010 22:11 - updated by John Butler 7 Mar 2010 11:53The aim of the new British Orienteering Ranking Scheme is to rank regular and competent orienteers in order of orienteering ability in the hope that this will spur the spirit of competition, thereby helping to raise both navigational and fitness standards and adding to the satisfaction of participating for regular orienteers. The significant difference between the old and the new schemes is that the old ranking list compared competitors within an age class whereas the new compares competitors, male and female across age classes and courses. The new scheme produces a single ranking list based on the sum of the six highest scores obtained by a competitor in the last 12 months in National (Level 1) and Regional (Level 2) events. Short classes (and M/W18B) are ranked, but are no longer ranked separately. Scores are calculated by comparing the average points of other competitors on the same course in the last 12 month period. The list is continually updated as results are received, but its display is refreshed once a week early on a Thursday morning. All competitors who are members of British Orienteering and aged 18 and above are eligible to score ranking points which are stored in one list displayed on the British Orienteering website http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/event/ranking.php. There is the option to customise the list by selecting from the Club, Age and Gender dropdown menus and clicking "Filter". Using the filters generates a new view of the list and your position is re-calculated based on your chosen parameters. When using the filtered views your overall ranking position, based on the single list, is shown in brackets and if this position has changed from the previous week, the change is displayed as a or – number alongside your ranking position. The easiest way to find your position in the ranking list is log in as a member (via the homepage) and then click on the ‘Find me’ button. From the public area of the website selecting your club and gender and scrolling through the list is probably be quickest. Participants are able to see which event the 6 highest scores came from by hovering the cursor over an individual score. Further information can be found on the British Orienteering website http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/news.php John Butler 16 Feb 2010 12:59 - updated by John Butler 7 Mar 2010 11:53Thank you to all the brave orienteers who battled through blizzards to get to Beverley, I hope you all got home safely. Neil Harvatt 22 Feb 2010 01:59 - updated by Pete Shew 22 Feb 2010 12:53Adding to her Gold at the Humberside Schools Cross Country, Charlotte Ward of HALO and City of Hull Athletic Club, added a Silver medal at the combined Yorkshire and Humberside Cross Country Championships at Thornes Park in Wakefield. Postponed from the original date in early January because of snow, Saturday 20th February proved far more accomodating. A hard overnight frost meant the underfoot conditions were firm, but the organisers provided a testing course non-the-less. Charlotte completed the Women's Under 17 class of 4,000 metres in 18 minutes, finishing 14th overall but 2nd, only 14 seconds down, on the Humberside winner. Running a controlled race, which saw the competetitors ascending three significant climbs, Charlotte started cautiously and gained places all the way to the finish. We all played our part and I was pleased to chat to my team mates, all of whom enjoyed the day. I am particularly grateful to Peter Fulwood driving up from Basingstoke ( picking up Martin Smith at Heathrow on the way ) and to Neil, Ken and Paddy for bringing the club tent and banner. It has become increasingly important that the welfare and safety of young people at local clubs should be a high priority. With this in mind ERCAS was set up to compliment National Governing Body's of Sport (NGB's) accreditation schemes to "recognise and accredit clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective and child friendly environment for children and young people". It is a generic scheme designed more towards health and safety issues, rather than the performance aspect of many NGB schemes, and to cater for the diversity of sports represented within junior sections at clubs across the East Riding. The scheme is appropriate for all local clubs to join, whatever their sport and/or club set up. The benefits of accreditation include: 1. Highlighting good practice within HALO and improving the profile of HALO within the local community. "Recognising the standards set by local clubs in ensuring provision of safe, quality sporting opportunities for young people" " John Butler 18 Dec 2009 00:31 - updated by John Butler 18 Dec 2009 00:43As a part of the Sport England funding initiative, British Orienteering has announced that HALO has been invited to be a "Participation Club" in 2010. Benefits to the club include the support of the Northern Participation Manager (Steve Vernon) during the year. Two other clubs in the north(Leicestershire Orienteering Club and Merseyside Orienteering Club) and three in the south (Hertfordshire Orienteering Club, North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club and West Anglian Orienteering Club) have also been selected. |
